I was inspired to write "The Adventures of SweetPea," stemming from my childhood experiences. Growing up African-American with a best friend who was Anglo-American, we shared countless joyful moments. However, when it came to literature, there was a noticeable divide, with narratives often placing her in a dominant role and me in a subord
I was inspired to write "The Adventures of SweetPea," stemming from my childhood experiences. Growing up African-American with a best friend who was Anglo-American, we shared countless joyful moments. However, when it came to literature, there was a noticeable divide, with narratives often placing her in a dominant role and me in a subordinate one. I envisioned a book where we, and any child, could see ourselves as the main characters at some point in the story. This vision led to the creation of a genuinely inclusive book, eliminating the notion of "my book" or "your book" and instead fostering a sense of "our book." "The Adventures of SweetPea" is designed to belong to everyone, embodying the principle that any child can be SweetPea, thereby celebrating diversity and unity in every story.
